Troop 3 Groton: A Century of Leadership, Service, and Community Spirit

For more than a century, Troop 3 Groton has been shaping young leaders and serving the community with dedication and pride. Founded in 1916, the troop has a long and meaningful history in Groton.

On April 1, 1924, Troop 3 was officially chartered with the Boy Scouts of America—now known as Scouting America—marking the beginning of a legacy that continues to inspire young people today.

At the heart of Troop 3’s mission is a commitment to respect, service, and leadership. The troop strives to carry out the mission of Scouting by encouraging young people to serve others, care for their community, and develop a deep sense of responsibility toward their country and the world around them.

A Youth-Led Program That Builds Leaders

Troop 3 Groton offers a stimulating and supportive youth-led program designed to help scouts grow both intellectually and physically. Through hands-on experiences, leadership opportunities, and mentorship, scouts develop confidence, teamwork skills, and the ability to lead with integrity.

Leadership development is a key part of the troop’s program. Scouts receive training, learn from strong role models, and are given real opportunities to lead within the troop. These experiences help prepare them not only for scouting adventures but also for future roles in their schools, careers, and communities.

Adventure and the Great Outdoors

The troop’s outdoor program is another cornerstone of the scouting experience. Through monthly outings such as camping and backpacking, scouts learn valuable life skills while developing self-reliance and a respect for the natural world. These outdoor adventures encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and a spirit of exploration.

During the school year, Troop 3 meets every Tuesday evening at the Union Congregational Church in Groton, welcoming boys from sixth grade and up, regardless of previous scouting experience.

Making a Difference in the Groton Community

Troop 3’s commitment to service extends far beyond their regular meetings and outdoor activities. During the 2025 season of the GrotonFest Family of Festivals, the scouts proved to be an incredible asset to the community.

Their willingness to help wherever needed made a tremendous difference in the success of the festivals. From guiding vendors to their booth locations, to helping with event mascots, and even picking up trash to keep the festival grounds clean, the scouts stepped in with enthusiasm and a strong spirit of service.

There truly seemed to be no task too big or too small for these dedicated young volunteers. Their positive attitudes, teamwork, and commitment to helping others embody the very values that scouting stands for.

A Tradition That Continues

With over 100 years of history, Troop 3 Groton continues to build character, leadership, and community spirit in the next generation. Their impact can be seen not only in the experiences of the scouts themselves but also in the countless ways they give back to Groton.

The GrotonFest team is deeply grateful for the dedication and support of Troop 3. Their energy and willingness to serve truly make a difference, helping create welcoming, joyful events for the entire community.

As Groton continues to grow and celebrate together, Troop 3 Groton remains an inspiring example of service in action.
