When you start a new business, there are plenty of things to think about.
Customers. Equipment. Marketing. Growth.
But for the owner of ohDEER Westford-Nashua, one of the most important decisions was simply to get involved.
Just two years after starting his business, he says joining the Groton Business Association and becoming involved with GrotonFest were two of the best decisions he made.
Why?
Because somewhere along the way, Groton stopped feeling like just another community his business served.
It started feeling like his community too.
And that's exactly the kind of story our Good Neighbors of Groton campaign was created to celebrate.
HELPING FAMILIES ENJOY THEIR OWN BACKYARDS
ohDEER provides all-natural solutions for some very familiar New England backyard visitors: ticks, mosquitoes, deer, and rabbits.
The company uses plant-based treatments designed to help homeowners protect their outdoor spaces from mosquitoes and ticks while also offering deer and rabbit solutions that help protect gardens and landscaping.
For anyone living in our part of New England, the need isn't difficult to understand.
Our wooded properties and beautiful outdoor spaces are a big part of why we love living here—but they also mean sharing our yards with plenty of wildlife and seasonal pests.
ohDEER's goal is to help families spend more time enjoying those yards.
But for the local Westford-Nashua team, serving a community has grown to mean more than providing a service.
FROM NEW BUSINESS OWNER TO FAMILIAR FACE
When we asked Stephern, the owner of ohDeer Westford Nashua what he enjoys most about serving Groton, he told us something we loved:
“The Groton community has made me feel like a part of the community since I started my business two years ago.”
He credits two decisions in particular: joining the Groton Business Association and getting involved with GrotonFest.
And those connections have grown.
“Every time I am at an event I enjoy seeing those I now know as well as constantly meeting new people in the community.”
LENDING A HAND AT THE PRESCOTT COMMUNITY CENTER
One example of that growing relationship happened ahead of the spring festival at the Prescott Community Center.
ohDEER donated its services to spray the property before the event, helping prepare the outdoor space for the community members who would soon gather there.
It's a fitting contribution from a business whose work is centered around helping people enjoy being outside.
Rather than simply attending the event, ohDEER found a way to contribute using the service and expertise it already had.
And that's something we see again and again among our Good Neighbors:
Give what you can. Share what you know. Find a way to help.
A SECOND TRUCK AND A GROWING TEAM
And there has certainly been growth.
This year, ohDEER Westford-Nashua has added another employee and a second truck, while its customer base in Groton continues to expand.
For a business only two years into its journey, those are exciting milestones.
But they're also a reminder of why supporting local businesses matters.
Behind every growing local company are people building careers, serving customers, creating jobs, investing in equipment, and developing relationships with the communities around them.
That second truck represents more than another vehicle on the road.
It represents a local business moving forward.
And we're delighted that Groton is becoming part of that growth story.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD NEIGHBOR?
Throughout our Good Neighbors of Groton campaign, we've discovered that there are many answers to that question.
Sometimes a Good Neighbor has been part of the community for generations.
And sometimes they're relatively new.
What matters is what happens once they arrive.
Do they participate?
Do they meet their neighbors?
Do they support local organizations?
Do they find ways to contribute?
And do they keep showing up?
For ohDEER Westford-Nashua, the answer has been yes.
In only two years, they've gone from starting a new business to joining the Groton Business Association, supporting community events, helping the Prescott Community Center prepare for its spring festival, sponsoring GrotonFest, and building a growing base of local customers and relationships.
Perhaps that's one of the nicest things about being a Good Neighbor:
You don't have to have been here forever to become part of the community. You just have to be willing to participate in it.
